Good Deed #1
During this first segment of the I am The Messenger Blog Assignment I was assigned to do an anonymous good deed for Jake Nicholls. I knew who Jake was because I have had a class with him before but I had never talked to him.
I had to go out of my comfort zone of not talking much by asking various people what they knew about Jake. Many did not know much about him either, but then I asked David Leonhardt. I asked David what Jake was like and what he liked to do. David said Jake was a very quiet kid but very nice and likable. He said Jake loved to play video games, this is when I thought of my good deed.
This past Sunday I went to the GameStop near my house to buy a gift card for Jake. Today, Monday, I gave the gift card to David so he could give Jake the gift card when he saw him in the hallway because this deed is supposed to be anonymous. Giving Jake this gift card made me feel very good inside and inspires me to want to do more good for many more people.
The one mark of a Marist student that this deed really embodies is "Spirit filled members of family and community". This deed fulfills this mark because family and members of the same community often give each other gifts to cheer each other up and hopefully this made Jake's day happier in spite of being in school.
Good Deed #2
During this second segment of the I Am The Messenger Blog Assignment I did an anonymous good deed for a person in my family. The deed I chose helped out both of my parents in a big way. I decided to clean the bathrooms and dust all my furniture on
Thanksgiving morning. Since we host Thanksgiving dinner, Wednesday night my mom was telling me about all the work she had to do the next morning to set up for Thanksgiving dinner. She was dreading the long day ahead of her. I figured this was the perfect opportunity to do a good deed, so I decided to get up early and clean the bathrooms and dust furniture before my mom woke up.
When my mom woke up, she was extremely relieved that she did not have to spend as much time cleaning as she thought she would have to. Helping my mom clean made me happy and I felt fantastic when I saw my mom so happy to have more time to focus on the other tasks she had lined up for the morning.
The mark of a Marist student that is embodied by this deed is "Agents of Justice and Service". This good deed embodies this mark of a Marist student because I was an agent of service by doing something my mom was going to do before she could do it so she would have more time to do other things that were more important.
Good Deed #3
Today I expanded my good deed to a random person that I did not previously know. I did not even say a word to the person that I helped, so this deed was totally anonymous. The good deed I decided to perform was paying for the person behind me in the McDonald's drive thru. Today I drove to McDonald's and went through the drive thru. I ordered my food and
drove up to the window. That is when I realized I had a perfect opportunity to complete my good deed. I saw there was a car behind me with two people. I asked the cashier to charge me
for the people behind me along with my bill. As I was pulling out of the lot, I looked at the people behind me, through the mirror, as they were told that the person in front of them payed for their meal. They were pleased and this made me feel quite happy because they were happy.
The mark of a Marist student that this deed embodies is "Service Leaders". My good deed embodies this mark of a Marist student because I shared the money I had in my wallet by using it to buy someone else's meal. They were unaware that they were going to get a free meal today but it may have made their day if they were feeling down.
Overall Experience
This whole experience has been great. I have had some fulfilling experiences during the course of all of my good deeds. First, I brought a little happiness to one of my peers at school. Second, I helped out my mom leading up to the big holiday we were hosting. Finally, I paid for a total stranger's meal at McDonald's. I had a lot of fun doing good things for other people whether I knew them or not.
